Kerby D. Hatter ’12, ’15, a pharmacist at Western PA Hospital, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in university studies and a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Hatter has accomplished a lot since she graduated, serving as a pharmacy manager at an outpatient pharmacy, and helping to open an outpatient pharmacy under fellow Shenandoah alumna Jennifer Kent Davis-Hrabik ’02.
Hatter pursued this job industry because of her strong passion to help others, specifically helping them to understand life-saving medications and how to effectively afford them. One of Hatter’s proudest achievements is working as one of the pharmacists for the Pittsburgh Pirates, a major league baseball team. Seeing the impact she was making and the need of sports medicine pharmacy made the job worthwhile. Another proud accomplishment of Hatter’s is working in a clinic to provide medications to patients at an affordable cost to increase compliance and health.
The field of pharmacy presents many challenges. One challenge that Hatter experienced was being put in a position of leadership with little experience in the field, right after graduation. Hatter certainly felt “growing pains” as she described them, in a growing business, but is proud of what she has overcome and accomplished. “Having a connection with a Shenandoah alumna, Jen Davis, helped me to get the job I have. Having a rotation with Jen also opened my eyes to a new field of pharmacy I wasn’t familiar with before,” said Hatter.
When asked what sparked her interest in getting involved with her alma mater, Hatter said, “I love Shenandoah and want to help improve it in any way. I want to give back to a place that has given me so much.” Hatter feels it is important to give back to Shenandoah because it helped shape her into who she is today, as well as where she is in her life. “I want to help other Shenandoah students have the opportunities I have had,” said Hatter. She looks forward to getting more alumni involved, as well as reconnecting with alumni from all years.
Hatter recently purchased a house in the Pittsburgh area and is fostering a Jack Russell mix puppy. She enjoys spending time with her mother and father. Hatter looks up to her parents who recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, and who set a great example of working hard to achieve your dreams. She also enjoys spending time with her older brother and niece.
