Professional Highlights:
A senior faculty member with almost 30 years of service to Shenandoah University, Dr. Jackson teaches sustainable business strategy, advanced management theory and practice, marketing and branding, and also directs the business school’s internship program. A passionate advocate of experiential learning, he has led consulting projects with hundreds of companies and non-profit organizations. Recent clients include Stryker and Quantum Sails.
Professor Jackson received his doctorate from Virginia Tech in 1994, and wrote among the first doctoral dissertations on the topic of business and sustainability. A “practicing academic,” he has held executive positions in the wind energy and manufacturing sectors and recently established an independent physical therapy clinic for his wife, Nina, a graduate of Shenandoah University. He chairs the Faculty Senate’s Faculty Affairs Committee and serves on the university’s Sustainability Council.
Activities
- Conducted research on ecotourism and conservation in the Galapagos during fall 2019 sabbatical, funded by a competitive faculty development grant from Shenandoah University. Deliverable will be Virtual reality documentary (joint project with Shenandoah Center for Immersive Learning)
- Currently under contract with Oxford University Press to write an article on ecotourism for the new Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Environmental Science
- Recently completed the graduate course, ENVR E-118 Environmental Management of International Tourism Development at Harvard University
- Appointed to International Advisory Board of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Vietnam (specialty: ecotourism)
- Earned certificate in climate change research, sponsored by Vietnam’s International Centre for Tropical Highland Ecosystems Research and Columbia University
- Developed the ‘Clockwise’ pedagogy, featured in BizEd, the journal of AACSB International (Clockwise develops students’ analytical, critical and lateral thinking skills)
- Co-authored statement for the Congressional record by Verax Technologies, Inc. Subcommittee on Health, Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, U. S. House of Representatives
- Published article ‘Rethinking the Case Method’ in the Journal of Management Policy & Practice, challenging the conventional wisdom about business case analysis
